Great question you left on my blog. First I will briefly give you a quick background on my current training.
Mon-Wendler 5/3/1 Squat+Bench
Tues-Gymnastics basic/static strength work
Thurs-Wendler 5/3/1 Dead+Press
Fri-Snatch, Split jerk (so far working up to heavy singles)

Pre & post is very mobility based. Usually following something from the MWOD. I find I am making pretty solid increases in the areas I am striving for. I think one thing that has topped out though, is the snatch. My PR is 200lbs, and I can't see my self getting anymore than 210lbs without more Olympic Lifting work or a substantial increase in strength.
How far can we expect to advance in a skill set without doing the work in the skill set? Thats a solid question, and I think it has alot to do with many variables. The overall difficulty of the movement for one, and the genetic ability of the athlete being another biggie. For instance, the affiliate I coach at follows main page programming. I am not a big fan of main page programming at all. In fact I am greatly down playing my thoughts on main page programming in that statement. But one thing that is constantly brought up is the lack of strength that can be built on main page. I tend to agree, for about 95% of the cases. There are some at our affiliate who likely have been lifting the same numbers in the strength department for a long while. Then there are others, in particular a female weighing between 120-125 that has only followed main page programming for roughly 2 years, and I have seen her pull 315. There are other males squatting close to 500lbs only on main page programming, while other who have followed the same programming at our gym, for the same length of time are yet to hit 225lbs. Obviously alot of other variables going on, but I think genetics is a huge one.
Overall, I think I follow the logic of Dan John in that, if it doesn't match your goals, why the hell are you doing it? So even if someone squats 500lbs only on dot com, does it mean I should do so if my goal is to squat 500lbs? Absolutely not in my opinion. Those are the same folks that could likely squat 600+ on a solid strength program.
At this point, with the love of Olympic lifting that I have developed, I would bet by sometime early 2011 I will adopt a full on Olympic program. The reason I have not adopted a full on Oly program right now is largely due to current life issues, and not truly knowing where I want my training to go.
I hope this kind of gives you some insight on my view point, and it wasn't just a bunch of rambling. Thanks for stoping by, its nice to see someone comment! Feel free to respond here so we don't have to jump back and forth.

Can I chime in here?.....
I like your outlook Ben to the expectation of how far someone can go. Both variables are well pointed and have merit.
However, is it possible to have 2 people - 1 that is genetically "gifted" and the other not nearly as much as the first - that train the same way, perform the same lifts with the correct coaching, to have the NOT-SO genetically gifted athlete out lift or out perform the athlete that is genetically gifted? (pardon the run-on sentence).
Possible? or not possible?
I don't feel there's really no right or wrong answer, moreso that it's just a matter of personal opinion. I'm genuinely curious to know yours.
Pat and I have talked a lot about "goals" and "next steps" and we've shared some very pointed answers (ones that were definitive) and then we've also shared some "I'm not exactly sure" types of answers. I rather enjoy the statement and logic of Dan John's "if it doesn't match your goals, then why do it?" because it hits the nail on the head.
One of my answers has been: "Yes, it doesn't match my goals, but I still find it to be fun." Is that an unacceptable answer? I battle with that currently....
Pat - watching Ben's blog for a while (though never commenting) and seeing his gains especially with his Snatch/C&J I like to think he and I are basically very close in overall athleticism and strength. And, he and I share the same logic. (For one, I too am not a fan of Main Site programming). Your thoughts here?
Ben - I think another reason why you have some at your gym that follow the same programming and do not show progress is that they most likely are not: 1) challenging themselves as much as they should physically even though they might believe they are, or 2) properly assessing how they feel and/or are adaptive in their approach for the training.
Anyway, I liked the dialogue that Ben provided to Pat's question so I figured I would add to it.
